Pat Munroe House

TDC-PatMunroe

The Pat Munroe House, built in 1893 by Mark Welch “Mr. Pat” Munroe for his first wife Edith Adelaide Walker, is a significant piece of Quincy’s history. “Mr. Pat,” a respected businessman and long-serving president of Quincy State Bank, had 10 children with Edith before her passing and later married Mary Frances Gray in 1912, with whom he had eight more children. The Munroe family occupied the house until 1972, when it was purchased by John Welch Bates, a grandson of “Mr. Pat,” and later donated to the City of Quincy. The Quincy Garden Club has leased the home since then.

The Pat Munroe House, constructed from heart pine, features unadorned Victorian architecture, notable for its stained glass windows, sculptured mantels, and plaster ceiling medallions. Though the basic structure remains unchanged since 1893, the grounds have evolved from a farm-like setting to a beautifully landscaped area with camellias, azaleas, and other ornamental plants.
